Van den Goorbergh finishes twelfth in historic home race, Sasaki secures double points finish for RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP in Assen
Zonta van den Goorbergh crossed the finish line in twelfth place on Sunday afternoon in the Moto2 race at the TT Circuit Assen. The Dutchman equalled his best result of the season and scored points for the fourth time this year. Teammate Ayumu Sasaki finished fifteenth, securing a double points finish for RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP in their home Grand Prix.
Following a positive qualifying session on Saturday afternoon, Van den Goorbergh and Sasaki started the 22-lap Moto2 race at a sunny and warm TT Circuit Assen from twelfth and nineteenth on the grid, respectively. However, Van den Goorbergh didn’t get off the line well and dropped back to eighteenth in the opening lap, just ahead of his Japanese teammate.
From there, Van den Goorbergh was able to maintain a strong and consistent pace, gradually working his way forward. He ultimately crossed the line in twelfth, earning four world championship points and moving up to nineteenth in the standings. Sasaki finished in fifteenth place, scoring his first world championship point of 2025.
With that, an important and intense weekend comes to a close for RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP—one that, alongside the action on track, was also filled with off-track activities. The sole Dutch Grand Prix team would like to thank all sponsors, partners, and guests for their visit and loyal support.
Zonta van den Goorbergh (P12 / +13.635):
“After struggling in previous editions of the TT, I can honestly say this has been my best TT so far. It felt extra special with the full grandstands and everyone cheering during the cooldown lap. It’s a shame about the first lap where Arbolino and I touched, costing us some time. After that, I pushed hard and gave it everything for twenty laps, resulting in a strong finish. My race pace was very consistent, and despite losing five seconds to the leader in the opening lap, I ended up finishing just thirteen seconds behind the winner. It was a physically demanding race, but I think we can go home with a sense of satisfaction.”Ayumu Sasaki (P15 / +23.837):
“First of all I want to say a big thank you to all the RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP fans for their support all weekend. The race was more difficult than I expected, caused by a different front feeling. We managed to score a point so that’s positive. It was a great weekend and we know we have work to do for the next race in Germany. Let’s keep working and try to improve ourselves even more there.”Jarno Janssen – RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP Team Manager:
“I couldn’t be more proud of both riders. They both rode fantastically today and fought until the very end. Zonta handled himself incredibly well amidst the pressure and excitement of a home Grand Prix. This weekend – and especially the race – gives us a lot of confidence going into the upcoming GPs. Off the track, we also look back on a fantastic weekend with all the guests we had the pleasure of welcoming to our VIP area. I believe it was another very successful edition, and we hope to welcome everyone again next time.”
The next Grand Prix takes place on the weekend of July 11–13 at the Sachsenring in Germany.
