Straight after his career as an active rider (1980 – 1994), in which he won nine Grand Prix races and finished second twice and third once in the 125cc championship, Hans Spaan began working as a mechanic. Already in his first and second year he won the championship with the Japanese rider Haruchika Aoki. Under Spaan’s wings Luis Salom finished second in the Moto3 championship in 2012. Hans Spaan has been working in all GP classes (125cc, 250cc, 500cc) on several types and makes. At RW Racing GP he is technical manager and crew chief for Bo Bendsneyder.
“I’ve seen so many riders come and go… With each of them it is different. You have to get to know each rider, to understand what he means. One is very clear and precise in his explanation, the other says something other than what he actually means. You also have to get to know the strong and weak points of a rider. Usually it takes a few races before you know and understand one another well. As far as understanding a rider concerns it helps that I have raced at a high level myself.
Since I started working as a mechanic a lot has changed. In the old days you could do it all yourselves. I still can, but I’m not allowed to. That’s a pity, because doing it yourself saves money and it is a challenge to find solutions. Luckily there still is much to gain in gearboxes and the setup of the gearing. That remains an interesting challenge.”
