RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP ready for season opener after positive test in Jerez
The RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP team is ready for the start of the new Moto2 season. On Thursday, the final test day at the Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto was completed, allowing the team to look back on three positive days. Under dry and sunny conditions, Zonta van den Goorbergh and Ayumu Sasaki were able to get a lot of work done in preparation for the upcoming season.
After completing the first two test days of 2025 at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, all Moto2 teams travelled to the Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto for the only official winter test. Over three days, teams and riders made their final preparations for the new Grand Prix season, which is set to begin in just one week.
Tyre supplier Pirelli introduced the SCX rear tyre for the first time, a softer compound than what Moto2 riders have used so far. Zonta van den Goorbergh finished the test with an impressive sixth-fastest lap time, proving that his pace remained strong over multiple laps. His new teammate Ayumu Sasaki ended the test in seventeenth place on the timesheets, making a strong first impression with the RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP team after missing the final two races of 2024 due to injury.
Zonta van den Goorbergh (P6 – 1’40.112 / +0.560)
“I think we can be proud of the way we have started the season with these two tests. We had good test days in both Portimão and Jerez and were able to try a lot of things, discovering what works and what doesn’t. In the end, we found the right direction and were consistently fast, so I think we should be happy with the work we have done over the past few days. The final day in Jerez was also positive, even though we couldn’t get the most out of the new soft SCX tyre. Nevertheless, we are in a strong position, especially since we primarily worked with the standard tyres that we will use in the coming race weekends. Now we head to Thailand, which will be a completely different challenge in terms of conditions and setup. We’ll have to see what works there and what doesn’t, but we’re going with a good feeling.”
Ayumu Sasaki (P17 – 1’40.521 / +0.969)
“In general, it was a good test for us. We made a step forward from Portimão and improved ourselves day by day. I feel comfortable with the bike and we have worked in the right way all three days. I’m very happy and satisfied with this test, although I know we still have work to do to get to where we want to be. We’re working in the right way and I feel very good with the team, the atmosphere is very good. I cannot wait to start the season now and build up our speed. Hopefully we can have a great season together.”Jarno Janssen – RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP team manager
“The final test day in Jerez is done, and we can look back on this last day with a positive feeling. This day was mainly focused on a time attack, and it went well. With three strong test days in Jerez and two valuable days in Portimão last week, we have had a solid preparation. Both riders are pleased with the progress we have made in the past weeks, and as a team, we are satisfied with the steps we have taken. Now, our full focus is on the first Grand Prix of the season in Buriram, Thailand. The preparations are complete, and we are ready to fight in the opening round of 2025.”
The Grand Prix of Thailand at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram will take place during the weekend of February 28 – March 2.
