RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP powers ahead for more points in Aragón
This weekend, the eighth round of the FIM Moto2 World Championship will be held at Motorland Aragón. Previously held in September, the Spanish Grand Prix has been moved earlier in the calendar this year. Following a positive weekend in Silverstone, RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP hopes to continue that upward trend.
Motorland Aragón has been a staple on the Grand Prix calendar since 2010 and has become familiar ground for everyone in the MotoGP paddock. Thanks to the frequent use of the track in junior racing series, the young riders are also well-acquainted with the circuit. The track is 5.08 kilometers long, with ten left-hand corners and seven right-handers. The longest straight is nearly one kilometre, and the modern layout features significant elevation changes.
Zonta van den Goorbergh scored points again in Silverstone and proved he can compete with the Moto2 top ten despite a less-than-ideal starting position. Ayumu Sasaki secured a solid grid position in England but just missed out on points during the race, giving him a clear goal for this upcoming weekend.
Zonta van den Goorbergh:
“Motorland Aragón is a track where I’ve had a lot of fun and good results in the past, so I’m looking forward to going back. Last year, the grip level was very low due to the new asphalt, so we’ll have to see what it’s like this time. It’s going to be a hot weekend, so quite different from what we had in Silverstone. Hopefully, we can get through Friday without any issues. Either way, we’re going to work hard this weekend.”Ayumu Sasaki:
“Motorland Aragón was a very good track for me last year, it’s where I scored my first points in Moto2. I’m looking forward to go there again and I think we are improving every weekend, slowly but surely. I cannot wait to have a good weekend and achieve our target, which is scoring points. I’m going to focus on myself and work hard with the team to achieve that goal this weekend.”Jarno Janssen – RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP team manager:
“After the weekend in Silverstone, we spent another day testing at the TT Circuit Assen, but unfortunately that day was mostly rained off. It’s a shame because we had quite a few things we wanted to test. Although we were able to cross a few items off our list, the day didn’t deliver what we had hoped. That’s out of our hands now. We’re now about to head to Aragón. This time already in early June, whereas we normally race there in September. It’s a great track but certainly not an easy one. We’ve had mixed results there in the past, and around this time of year I can’t help but think of Luis Salom, who stood on the top step there in 2012. Just like every other weekend, it’ll be about working hard and making sure we’re competitive from Friday onwards so we can score maximum points on Sunday.
Ayumu scored his first Moto2 points there last year, so let’s hope we can keep that momentum going. We made a big step forward in Silverstone, even though we didn’t score points yet. Hopefully, we can do that this weekend and keep progressing.”
The race weekend at Motorland Aragón starts with the first free practice session on Friday morning, followed by the official practice at 14:05 in the afternoon, which will determine the fourteen riders who go directly through to Q2. After a second free practice session on Saturday morning, qualifying will begin at 13:45 in the afternoon to determine the grid for Sunday’s race. The 21-lap race is scheduled to start at 12:15 on Sunday.
