No points for RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP after hectic race day in Malaysia

Ayumu Sasaki and Zonta van den Goorbergh were unable to score points in Sunday’s Moto2 race at the Sepang International Circuit. The Malaysian Grand Prix schedule was significantly delayed due to a serious incident before the Moto3 race, which led to the Moto2 race being held after the MotoGP class.

Under very sunny and hot conditions – even warmer than on Friday and Saturday – RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP lined up for the Moto2 race at the Sepang International Circuit. However, a serious incident during the sighting lap of the Moto3 race caused a long delay, resulting in the Moto2 race being run as the final event of the day. RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP wishes José Antonio Rueda and Noah Dettwiler – the riders involved in the incident – a speedy and full recovery.

When the Moto2 race finally got underway, it was red-flagged within two laps following a major crash. Just before this red-flag situation, Ayumu Sasaki and Zonta van den Goorbergh were involved in another incident but fortunately escaped without serious consequences.

The race was restarted over eleven laps, which proved to be a tough challenge for both Sasaki and Van den Goorbergh. The two riders made progress compared to their starting positions, but with the Japanese rider finishing seventeenth and the Dutchman in twenty-first, RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP unfortunately leaves Malaysia without any World Championship points.

Ayumu Sasaki (P17 / +16,448):
“It has been a difficult weekend here in Malaysia. We started on the back foot on Friday but we made the right steps forward on Saturday on Sunday. Unfortunately, that wasn’t good enough for points today as we finished in seventeenth position. I had quite a bad start which cost us in the beginning of the race. It’s a shame that we weren’t able to score points, but we were close so we have to look ahead and do better in the final two races of the year.”

Zonta van den Goorbergh (P21 / +23,862):
“Unfortunately, I didn’t quite have the feeling I was hoping for in today’s race. Nevertheless, there are plenty of positive things to take away from this weekend. A lot is changing in and around the box, which gives confidence for the final two Grands Prix, but also for next year. We have two more races to go, and hopefully we can rediscover the right feeling there. Both the team and I are working very hard, and that gives us confidence to come back to where we want to be. I also want to wish José Antonio Rueda and Noah Dettwiler all the best and a speedy recovery.”

The next Grand Prix will take place from November 7 to 9 at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal.
